Na passada semana, no âmbito da Semana Profissão Engenheiro (SPE), o LSTS foi visitado por uma variedade de alunos do ensino secundário como objetivo de dar a conhecer tanto a tecnologia que é desenvolvida no laboratório como as funções que um Engenheiro desempenha na sua vida profissional.

Last week, as part of the Engineer Profession Week (SPE), LSTS was visited by a variety of high school students in order to get known both the technology that is developed in the lab and the kind of work that an Engineer develops in his or her professional life.

No dia 3 de Abril irá realizar-se o Seminário “O Mar: um ativo estratégico nacional” promovido pelo Instituto da Defesa Nacional (IDN), a Câmara Municipal de Faro e a Universidade do Algarve. Este Seminário está integrado nas Jornadas Descentralizadas de Segurança e Defesa Nacional, a realizar em Faro, no período de 29 de março a 4 de abril de 2019.

The Doris project objective is to develop a modular autonomous surface vehicle (ASV), capable to sample the sea surface micro-layer (SML) and perform analysis of surfactant films and the biological communities residing within the micro-layer.

Following the kick-off meeting last July, the members of the DORIS project convened at FCUP for a progress report.

Será inaugurada manhã a exposição “Segredos escondidos no fundo do mar”, no CMIA Matosinhos que pretende sensibilizar o público para a importância do conhecimento do mar profundo.
Nesta exposição, que conta com a colaboração do CESAM (Universidade de Aveiro), do Museu de História Natural da Universidade do Porto e do LSTS, será possível conhecer melhor os vários habitats do mar profundo, os seres que os habitam e algumas da ferramentas utilizadas para os estudar.

On March 13th, an internal workshop of the OMARE project (Marine Observatory of Esposende) was held at the Maritime Museum of Esposende, with the participation of the Laboratory of Systems and Underwater Technology.

On March 11, 2019, was held the final workshop of the MARINFO project, which began in January 2016. The location of the final MARINFO workshop was the cruise terminal at the port of Leixões. Most speakers and present spend much of their time at sea or study marine processes and ecosystems so having the Atlantic Ocean as a background could not be more appropriate.

In this workshop, the various partners involved (CIIMAR, CIBIO and LSTS) presented the results of the project and there was also the intervention of 3 invited speakers: Michael Elliott of the University of Hull (UK) and Andrea Munafò of the National Oceanography Center (UK).

The University of Porto and the Portuguese Navy signed a new cooperation protocol last Friday, March 1st, 2019. The ceremony was conducted by Professor António Sousa Pereira, Rector of UPorto and Professor João Falcão e Cunha, Dean of Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and followed by the visit of Admiral António Maria Mendes Calado, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), and his delegation to the Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory (LSTS)

Meet Matheus F. Reis, PhD student at the MarineUAS program that is currently working on an algorithm that allows to steer a robotic vehicle along a specified path defined with respect to a moving target and, just last week, has put this on-going work to test.

From a scientific point of view, coastal waters are particularly interesting due to their heterogeneous characteristics influenced by factors such as currents, wind and fresh water runoff. However, such environment is also a challenge to study due to its dynamic spatiotemporal variation.

In the article “Toward adaptive robotic sampling of phytoplankton in the coastal ocean” NTNU researchers present methods and results from field experiments using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with embedded algorithms that focus sampling on features in three dimensions.
