MELOA - Multi-purpose/Multi-sensor Extra Light Oceanography Apparatus

2021-04-29

MELOA is an H2020 project that is developing an innovative, based on the first WAVY drifter version developed at LSTS at project RAIA, a new family of WAVY drifter units. This new family of drifters will have the characteristics of a low-cost system, easily deployable, high versatility, and low maintenance system for in-situ measurements for marine environments.

Running from December 2017 to February 2022, MELOA is focused on covering marine observation gaps by increasing the availability of in-situ data for coastal and open ocean zones.

The MELOA Consortium is composed by 9 European entities working in close collaboration with the marine communities. The LSTS laboratory at FEUP, taking into account the vast experience in developing systems with these characteristics, will develop the prototypes and their respective on-board software, which includes: communication module, global location system and data storage.

In order to configure, control and monitor WAVY systems, the LSTS laboratory will also develop a mobile application "WavyHub". With the use of the Android WavyHub application it is possible to change sensor settings, download the existing WAVY logs, preview the data contained in the logs, send the data files taken from WAVY to a server and check WAVY functional status.

Recently an MELOA abstract, "MELOA Catalogue and Geoportal: A modern approach for open access and visualization of in-situ drifter data",  has been selected as an Oral presentation for the 9th EuroGOOS conference. The conference will be held online from 3 -5 May 2021.
